Mechanical  Design Engineer

Role Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Piping Design Engineer to join our client’s team, working on challenging and rewarding projects within the nuclear and defence sectors. This role involves developing detailed piping designs and ensuring the systems meet project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative and robust solutions for complex projects in highly regulated environments. This is a contract role, Hybrid with 2 days every 2 weeks and can be Outside of Scope of IR35( pending determination).

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed piping system designs, including layout plans, isometrics, and 3D models.
  • Perform stress analysis, fluid flow assessments, and thermal expansion calculations.
  • Generate and review piping design deliverables, including material take-offs, specifications, and detailed drawings.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards and codes (e.g., ASME, BS, EN).
  • Collaborate with engineers across disciplines to integrate piping systems into overall project designs.
  • Support vendor design reviews, material selection, and technical submissions.
  • Provide technical guidance during fabrication, installation, and commissioning phases.
  • Address design non-conformances and contribute to risk assessments, including HAZID and HAZOP reviews.
  • Communicate with stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and project teams, to meet project requirements and resolve technical issues.

Qualification and Experience

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Piping Design Engineer in nuclear, defence, or other highly regulated sectors.
  • Strong proficiency in 2D/3D design tools such as AutoCAD, Plant 3D, SolidWorks, or similar software.
  • Knowledge of relevant piping standards and codes (e.g., ASME B31.3, BS EN 13480, RCC-M).
  • Experience with stress analysis tools such as Caesar II or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of materials, welding techniques, and fabrication processes.
  • Familiarity with design documentation, including method statements, risk assessments, and QA plans.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems and deliver high-quality designs.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards it (e.g., via IMechE).
  • Experience in design substantiation and safety case development.
  • Knowledge of UK nuclear or defence sector standards and regulations.
  • Familiarity with full project lifecycles, from concept design to commissioning.
